Abandoned amusement park (part one), Berlin, Germany

Visited 24.8.2011 by jonahi. This quite well-known ghost funfair named Spreepark is almost in the middle of Berlin, in the former East Berlin area. It was opened in 1969 and the name was Kulturpark Plänterwald back then. In 1991 the name and the concept were changed into more western style. In 2001 the park was closed, because of large debts. The visitor amounts had also dropped. You can visit the old Spreepark website here.


I can't describe the atmosphere in words. Even the photos don't do it properly. The hair-raising silence in place of the children's laughter, the benches where no-one hadn't been eating ice cream for years, the empty cotton candy stalls and game halls, and the deserted, afforested car tracks were totally horrifying. The most breath taking thing was still the main attraction of the park: the ferris wheel. It was spinning around all alone in the wind, making terrifying noises. It even stopped every now and then, just like to take people for a ride, so the electricity might have been on. It wasn't hard to imagine some ghost kids into the empty carriages. Huh, what a place, totally worth visiting! I think this is my favourite exploration target at the moment.
